The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences

Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences:
Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences
Location: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is the geology museum belonging to the University of Cambridge (it is located in Downing Street in central Cambridge). Although a university facility, the museum is generally open 6 days per week (it is closely on Sundays) including some bank holidays - please check the official website for details.

The Sedgwick Museum is named after Adam Sedgwick (1785 to 1873) who is generally considered to be one of the founders of modern geology, and who was Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge from 1818 until his death in 1873. In terms of his contribution to the museum, Sedgwick greatly added to the geological collection that had previously been donated to the university by Dr John Woodward (1665 to 1728). Under Adam Sedgwick, the collection grew so large that a new purpose-built space was needed to accommodate it, and hence the construction of the Sedgwick Museum, which opened in 1904 in a ceremony attended by King Edward VII.

The museum's collection today is massive - perhaps around 1.5 to 2 million items. This includes rocks, minerals, and fossils. This include, among other things, several icthyosaur skeletons purchased by Sedgwick from Mary Anning, and the "Beagle" collection which includes about 2,000 specimens collecting by Charles Darwin during his voyage on HMS Beagle (1831 to 1836)
